What do I do to my fish tank water?

Darth Mutt asked:

Woke up at 7, fed my goldfish, turned the light on for an hour, went to work, lunch at 12, turned the light back on until i got home around 6. Around 12 the temperature was about 75, got home it was 82! I keep hearing I need to give them 8-12 hours of light. But the light heats the hell out of my water. Give me some feed back. My water also is kinda cloudy. It’s a new tank and only had water in it for about 2 days. Helpmuh out…………
It’s a 10 gallon tank with a fancy goldfish… already have a filter system too.

change the water to something cooler, clean out the tank and get it a filteration system

I would first off, move the light a little bit away if you can. Secondly I would use bottled water or fill up a container with water and let it sit over night before putting it in the tank, the cloudy water, I dont know what that is for sorry

If you used a bio additive to the water which adds benificial bacteria or a bio filter the bacteria will be blooming right now. In a week or two the cycle will finish and your water will be clear again. Also make sure you are not over feeding because this can also cause excessive bacteria growth witch is not bad but can cause cloudy water. As for your heating question try slightly reducing the wattage of the bulb. Enough for lighting but not so hish it heats up your water too much. For a goldfish room temperature of slightly above is perfect for them.

Tank light is not necessary. Natural window light is sufficient (keep the tank out of direct sunlight). If natural light is not available (no windows) turn on a table lamp near the tank. The cloudy water could be from overfeeding. Fish waste is not decomposing. Gravel and undergravel filter should fix that problem. Also add 1 tbsp. of kosher salt per gallon of fresh water.

You don’t need to give fish any light. They are perfectly happy without any light ever at all. And in fact, artificial light can actually damage the eyes of some fish. The light is for plant growth and our personal viewing pleasure. Leaving a light on too long will, without a doubt, affect the water temperature. Unless you have live plants, you only need to leave it on for a couple of hours at night when you want to watch your fish.

Your water is cloudy because it’s still new and hasn’t cycled yet. It will take time for the water to finish its cycling and the cloudiness will eventually clear up. Of course, cloudiness can be a result of overfeeding, so make sure that you aren’t overfeeding and are removing all uneaten food after about 5 minutes.

try using a flouroscent light. You can buy the cfl ’s in the dollar store. As for cloudy water..Goldfish are notoriously dirty fish. You need to either improve you current filtration or add another filter. you didn’t tell us your tank size but you may have too many fish in your tank for the size. This is a big problem. 1 gallon of water per inch of fish. Hope this helps… Rob

don’t turn on the lights for any unnecessary reasons. Only turn on the lights when you are viewing or interacting with the fish / fish tank. The only exception to this rule would be if there are live plants in the tank as it would then be necessary to keep the lights on for a minimum of 8-10 hours.

your water is cloudy because the tank hasn’t been fully cycled. you can do a 10% partial water change every other day and add a product called “cycle” to speed up the cycle process. below is the link of the product.

I am assuming that your tank doesn’t receive any natural light that is why you have artificial lighting, and that you are using incandescent bulb, that is why the water temp rose to 82F. I suggest to change you light to flourescent light, which will allow you to light your tank without the worry of rising water temp, they do not give off as much heat as incandescent bulb does.

AS for the cloudy water, get a filtration system going. Goldfish are notoriously heavy feeders and heavy feeding means a lot of waste, and to cope up with the waste you have to have a good filtration with regular water changes to keep the tamk clean.

gold fish can live in relatively cold water so turn you thermastate down to 70 and then you really olny need the light on for about 7-8 hours because usually the light in a room is enough light for the fish. You only need lights on for that long if you have plants in the tank or if you have fish that breed by showing off their colors to their mates. But you chould be fine if you have the temp set alittle lower and reduce the light hours, also a $4 automatic timer will do you good because the light should be on for about an hour before you feed them(they’ll eat more which will inturn keep your water cleaner) but your water you should if you anly have 1 gold fish be changed at least once a week with a rock vacume thing, stick it in the rocks intile it hits the bottom of the tank and hold it there untile the water in the tube turns clearer. The stuff that really turns water bad and fast if food, try not to over feed and that will help your water problem.
