Is my hot water tank broke or is the breaker bad?

I Miss MJ & I’m Bad. asked:

I was away for a few days and when I came home there was no hot water. The breaker tripped so I reset it. It tripped again. I drained alot of brown sludge out of the tank and refilled it but the breaker keeps tripping. What do you think is wrong? I have no idea how old the tank is.

i would replace both heating elements… they sell a special socket for easy removal….when putting new ones in dont over tighten them….. just snug them in..them fill tank if they drip tighten till drip stops

The breaker trips at the electrical panel? Check you connections at the top of the heater. it could be that a wire nut has come loose and it is going to ground.
It could also be that an element is going to ground. I would check continuity to ground on the tank. You can use a volt meter that has the “ohms” setting.

Make sure the power is off before you touch any connection or check for continuity.

The breaker is fine. If there is no puddle under the heater, then more than likely you have a burned out element.

Shut the power off, drain the tank, remove the wiring to the elements, unscrew them from the tank and examine them.
