100 g fish tank water changes in winter?
Crazyblue asked:
over the summer I got a 100 gallon fish tank. I also have a home made python that made water changes out the door a breeze. However, now it’s winter here and I can no longer open the door. I wanted to know how I could make these water changes without leaving my door open. I thought of buying a 55 gallon drum but after thinking of the weight of water I thought against it.
Now I’m thinking of maybe going with a 10 to 15 gallon container and just making 3 trips a week with that.
Yes, my fish tank is overcrowded. I have African’s and the tank is overstocked slightly to keep down the aggression. Everything is fine as long as I find a way to keep up with the water changes…
I use to change it 25% a week or if I missed a week I’d do a 50% change the following week.
Yes my tank is fully cycled. I didn’t know I could break up the 25% and do say, 5 gallons every other day.

ok this is what i do
get a big bowl (make sure u are strong enought to carry it when there is water in it) and suck the water from the tank into it then pour it into the toilet tub whatever.
Try running a garden hose connected to your siphon to the bath tub, this will allow you to empty the water from the tank right down the drain. This is what I do and it works very well, also I have a hose running in from the outside that is connected to a hot and cold water faucet, this allows me to fill the tank with water that is the right temperature. Having the hose running in to fill the tank, I usually just run it through the window, I only have to have the window open about an inch for the hose to fit through. Hope this helps a bit, e-mail me if you have any questions.
How much of the water are you changing per week? In a cycled tank, you should be changing between 10-25% per week or fortnight depending on nitrate levels. In your case, that’s between 10 gallons, and 25 gallons. With a water change THAT big, I would split it up and change between 2 and 5 gallons per day over 5 days.
EDIT:
As long as the result is a 10-25% weekly water change, it doesn’t really matter HOW you change it.
