is it safe to live in the basement with the gas water heater?

riddlemethis asked:

we (myself, hubby, and 3 month old) just moved into a basement (temporarly) of a home in Virginia. The gas tank/water heater is down in the basement with us. The gas tank runs constantly, never rests, and is in a closet, however, the door of the closet is a shutter door, so basically the gas tank ventilates by throwing the air back into the basement we live in.
Question is, is it safe to be breathing in that air?
