Home water pump questions?

*Apology in advance, I dont know anything about this stuff!
We’ve had a long running problem with our water pump…it happens irregularly, sometimes not for months. The problem is that sometimes it wont ‘kick on’ and trips the breaker. My husband can usually get it running by resetting the breaker, knocking on the side of the pump, and pushing the ‘on’ lever. He walked me through it earlier today and I got it to run, but it stopped again, and I cant get it going again..
Anything you can tell me about what’s going wrong, how to solve it, etc would be appreciated.
Also, I was trying to look it up online but I dont know what type of pump it is. I’ll describe it - its a little metal tank that sits on top of the bigger water tank. It has a little metal lever that you move one way to turn it off and hold it slightly to turn it on. What words should I use to search for this pump?
Please feel free to share anything else you know about pumps, prices, etc.
Thank you so much, in advance.

It sounds to me as if your pump motor has a bad bearing or the sleeve is worn very bad. Would check on new pump and if too expensive you should be able to buy new motor. If pump or tank is leaking bad would not even bother with new motor..
